Counseling Center
Why a counseling service?
College years are very significant for the developing identity of students. These years are full of events/experiences that may encourage or discourage student’s socio-emotional and intellectual growth. It is a time of transition when students move from High school to College. As a result, it involves change and possible stress. College students have more subjects to select, spend more time with peers, have more opportunities to explore different values and are more challenged intellectually by academic work. Once they enter college, students are confronted with these responsibilities, which may lead to viewing themselves as “grown up”. Students may become involved in a variety of risky behaviors such as alcohol abuse, drug abuse and addiction, eating problems etc. Depression, anxiety, loneliness, lack of self-confidence, procrastination, family problems, interpersonal conflicts, problems in intimate relationships, questions about sexuality and achievement conflicts are some of the major problems encountered by college students.
Compared with the students all over the world, some of the extra challenges that the Albanian students face when they enter UNYT consist of taking all classes in English, having foreigner (English and non English speaker) professors. Above all, they are exposed to a completely different school setting which implies rules and regulations different from the Albanian public university.
