I. Course Objectives
This
course is intended to introduce to and provide students
with basic concepts and theories that populate the
field of sociology. The purpose is to enable to think
about the society and relationship between social
actors in a critical way. The society is a broad concept
that includes such subjects as individual, family,
socialization, culture, work, education, social structures
and forces. The central issue is the relationship
between the individual and the society. We will trace
the role of individual within the society and the
influence of the society upon the individual through
exploration of such social institutions and categories
as family, social and political structures, class,
sex, race, religion, age.

III. Requirements
& Expectations
Attendance:
I expect you to attend the lectures on regular basis.
It is your responsibility not to miss the lecture.
While in classroom, eating or drinking is not allowed.
Readings:
I also expect to read in advance the material assigned
for discussion. This will help you better understand
and follow the discussion in the classroom; it also
may help you raise questions about issues that are
of interest of you.
Participation:
Your active participation while discussing the material
in classroom is important. I highly encourage you
to raise questions and ask about issues you need to
clarify. Your participation will influence on you
final grade.
Examinations:
The most important tests are the midterm and final
exams. They will be composed of multiple choice questions
and short essay. I also will use every week “concept
tests” composed of five to ten multiple choice and
true / false questions. They will help you prepare
better for both midterm and final exams.
Paper:
You are expected to write a paper 5-10 pages length,
double space. The details will be given to you on
a separate sheet. The paper will be submitted at the
end of the course. With my help, you will pick up
a topic and write on it. You also will make a 5-10
minute presentation.
